Vulvoplasty creates the external anatomy, typically a clitoris, labia, and a female urethral opening, without a full vaginal canal. There is no lifelong dilation schedule. Recovery is shorter than canal surgery. Penetrative vaginal intercourse is not the design.
Vaginoplasty adds the canal. Genital hair clearance gates that date. If the field is not clear, the date moves.
This note puts those two operations next to each other so you can read the difference before a consultation. It does not assign you one of them. Dr. Maurice M. Garcia, MD, MAS plans both. He is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology. The choice is made with him, from your anatomy, your sexual goals, and the medical limits that belong in the first visit.
Two operations, not two sizes of one
People sometimes hear vulvoplasty described as a smaller vaginoplasty. That shorthand causes bad plans. Vulvoplasty is an operation with its own design. Vaginoplasty is an operation with its own design. They share a surgeon, a practice, and a requirement to treat the genital skin honestly. They do not share a canal, a dilation schedule, or the same use of tissue.
Chrisalys is a team practice in Beverly Hills. Genital surgery sits with Dr. Garcia. Facial surgery and voice sit with Dr. Toby G. Mayer, M.D., F.A.C.S.. Chest and body surgery sit with Dr. David N. Sayah, MD. You do not need four offices to ask how a genital operation fits a face or a chest that is already planned. You do need the genital operation named correctly, because the calendar, the hair map, and the authorization all follow the name.
Read the procedure pages beside this note, not instead of it: vulvoplasty and vaginoplasty. The bottom surgery section is the index if you are still looking at the wider set, including orchiectomy, metoidioplasty, hysterectomy, and scrotoplasty. Those are different operations. This page stays with the canal question.
What vulvoplasty builds
Vulvoplasty builds the external anatomy. In the way Dr. Garcia describes it, that is typically a clitoris, labia, and a female urethral opening, without a full vaginal canal. There is no lifelong dilation schedule, because there is no canal that has to be kept open. Recovery is shorter than canal surgery. Penetrative vaginal intercourse is not the design. If intercourse that uses a vaginal canal is the goal, vulvoplasty is the wrong operation to request under a softer name.
Hair removal of the genital skin is still required for vulvoplasty. Less skin is moved than in a full-depth vaginoplasty, and some skin is still used. The field that will be moved or closed is mapped and treated. A generic "bikini" package is not that map. The comparison of methods, and the reason a short sprint does not clear a field, is in how long electrolysis takes before bottom surgery.

Sensation, urinary position, and the look of the external anatomy are discussed in the consultation. This page does not promise a particular appearance, a particular sensation, or a complication rate. Those conversations use your exam, not a paragraph. The published clinical line stays the one Dr. Garcia uses: penetrative vaginal intercourse is not the design of vulvoplasty.
What vaginoplasty adds
Vaginoplasty adds the vaginal canal to the external construction. That single addition changes the operation. Tissue that will line the canal has to be clear of hair, because hair inside that lining becomes a lifelong problem. The operative date is gated on that clearance. If the field is still growing hair, the date moves. We would rather move a date than operate on skin that is not ready.
Penile inversion and related techniques are planned around your anatomy. The technique is chosen in consultation. It is not selected by this article. Depth, sensation, and dilation are also decided there. Dilation belongs to canal surgery. It is not a footnote you discover after you are home. If a lifelong dilation schedule is not a schedule you can keep, say that in the first visit. That fact belongs in the choice between these two operations.
The full vaginoplasty pathway, including the surgeon of record and the way aftercare is framed, is on vaginoplasty in Beverly Hills.
Hair clearance still gates the date
Both operations use genital skin. Vaginoplasty uses more of it, because the canal has to be lined. Vulvoplasty still uses some. The map is drawn with the surgical plan, then treated. Laser may reduce hair when the follicle has pigment the device can see. Laser on this site means permanent hair reduction, not a guarantee that every follicle is gone. Electrolysis is the method described as permanent hair removal, and it finishes the field.
Starting after a date is already on the board is how dates slip. A six-week sprint is not clearance. Clearance is measured in months. The last session is not the night before surgery. The skin has to be quiet. If you already have a surgical date in mind, start at vaginoplasty hair clearance and the pre-operative hair clearance overview. If you do not have a date, start at laser versus electrolysis.
The electrologist is named at the consultation. This site does not publish that name, and it does not publish a price list. Medically necessary pre-operative electrolysis may be covered when medically necessary. We verify your benefits. Cosmetic series are quoted separately. The insurance note is coverage for pre-operative electrolysis.
Who plans the operation
Dr. Maurice M. Garcia, MD, MAS, board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology, is the genital reconstructive surgeon for this work. The care-team line on the procedure pages says the same thing. Hormone therapy, primary care, and mental health are not staffed at Chrisalys. Coordination with the clinicians you already have is part of the plan. Fertility wishes, if they exist, are spoken before any operation that could affect them, not after.
A hysterectomy, an orchiectomy, or other genital stages may or may not belong on your calendar. They are not bundled into vulvoplasty or vaginoplasty by this article. If you are weighing metoidioplasty instead, that is a different operation with a different design, described on metoidioplasty. Do not use this comparison as a guide to that choice.

Coverage is verified, not promised
Either operation may be covered when it is medically necessary. We verify your benefits and start pre-authorization early. Chrisalys accepts Medi-Cal, LA Care, CalOptima Health, IEHP, Blue Shield, Anthem Blue Cross, and private plans. We verify your benefits before a date is set. If your plan is not listed, call 424-253-0000 and we will verify your benefits.
A page that says a plan "usually covers" genital surgery is not an authorization. The same rule we use for facial surgery applies here. California Medi-Cal may cover medically necessary gender-affirming care for an eligible member. The managed-care plan still sets the criteria, and a denial can still arrive. How that looks for facial work is written in Does Medi-Cal cover FFS?. The genital request is its own packet.
Letters, when the plan asks for them, come from your mental-health clinician. See WPATH letters. You can consult before the folder is perfect. You should not book a flight on a packet that has not been started. Check my insurance sends the plan name and the procedure to the pre-authorization team. It does not decide coverage by itself. Do not put a member ID on that form.
Self-pay and payment plans, when a portion is not authorized, are outlined at financing. We do not list a cash price for vaginoplasty or vulvoplasty on this page. The quote follows the operation you and Dr. Garcia actually choose.
What the consult decides
The consult is where dilation, sexual goals, and medical limits are decided. Bring the question you are actually asking. If you want external anatomy and you do not want a canal, say that. If you want a canal and you can keep a dilation schedule, say that. If you are unsure, say that too. The point of the visit is to leave with a named operation, not a slogan.
Ask who is the surgeon of record. For these two operations it is Dr. Garcia. Ask what skin will be used, and whether that skin is already being cleared. Ask what the plan will do if clearance slips. The answer, already used on this site, is that the date slips with it. Ask what is written down about intercourse, dilation, and recovery, so you are not reconstructing the operation from memory in a hotel.
Traveling patients can start with records and a virtual conversation when the visit is allowed. Virtual visits are for patients in California and are subject to telehealth consent. The practical guide is traveling patients. Pre-authorization should move before you book lodging.
Read the procedure pages beside this note
Use this article to see the difference. Use the procedure pages for the operation you are actually considering. Vulvoplasty states the external design and the board certification in the body of the page. Vaginoplasty states the canal, the hair gate, and the surgeon. Bottom surgery cost explains that there is no single price that covers every genital operation.
This page does not assign you one of them. The consultation does.
