Gender-affirming voice therapy
Speech-language pathology for the voice you want to use, with or without surgery. Sessions that respect stamina, safety, and how you actually speak.
Therapy that belongs next to surgery, not instead of a plan
Gender-affirming voice therapy works on pitch where it is safe to do so, and more importantly on resonance, intonation, articulation, and the habits that make a voice sound strained or unsupported. It is not an acting class. It is clinical speech-language pathology with a trans-only practice around it.
The voice team here holds both the surgical and speech-language side of care. That pairing is uncommon. It means your therapist already knows what the operating room will change, and your surgeon already knows what therapy can accomplish without an incision.
Therapy is often covered as medically necessary care, especially when tied to a surgical episode. It is also a complete path on its own. If you are traveling, we can begin virtually and concentrate in-person sessions around other appointments at 436 N Bedford Drive, Suite 202.
What sessions address
Resonance and placement
Where the voice sits in the face and chest, which often reads more strongly than pitch alone.
Pitch within a safe range
Finding a speaking pitch you can hold without fatigue or injury, including after glottoplasty or thyroplasty.
Intonation and speech patterns
Rhythm, emphasis, and the small habits that make a voice feel like yours in conversation.
Peri-operative coaching
Voice rest rules, graded return to speaking, and how to protect the folds after surgery.
What to expect.
Intake and baseline
Recordings, goals, vocal load (work, teaching, performance), and any upcoming surgery.
A working plan
Session frequency, home practice, and whether surgery should wait, proceed, or stay off the table.
Practice that fits your life
We set drills you will actually do. Stamina matters more than a perfect take in the clinic.
Reassessment
We listen again in ordinary speech, not only on a scale, and adjust.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do voice therapy without surgery?
Yes. Many patients never have laryngeal surgery. Therapy is a complete path when anatomy and goals allow it.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your starting point, how often you can practice, and whether surgery is involved. We estimate after the first visit rather than selling a package in the abstract.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Often, when billed as medically necessary speech-language pathology. Medi-Cal, LA Care, IEHP, and many private plans have a path. We help you check before you commit to a long series.
