Vulvoplasty in Los Angeles
External feminizing genital surgery without a vaginal canal. Chosen when depth is not a goal, or when medical reasons make a canal unwise.
Zero-depth is a complete operation, not a lesser vaginoplasty
Vulvoplasty (sometimes called shallow-depth or zero-depth vaginoplasty) creates vulvar anatomy, typically including clitoris, labia, and a female urethral opening, without constructing a full vaginal canal. There is no lifelong dilation schedule. Recovery is shorter than canal surgery. Sexual function is real; penetrative vaginal intercourse is not the design.
This is the right operation for some people and the wrong one for others. We do not steer you toward a canal because it is the more famous procedure, and we do not steer you toward vulvoplasty because it is simpler for the schedule. The consult is about dilation, sexual goals, prostate exams, and medical limits (prior surgery, pelvic radiation, or inability to dilate).
Dr. Maurice Garcia is the genital reconstructive surgeon on this pathway. Hair removal of the genital skin is still required. Insurance often covers vulvoplasty as medically necessary gender-affirming surgery. Start pre-authorization early. Compare with vaginoplasty if you are still deciding.
What vulvoplasty addresses
Vulvar construction
Clitoris, labia, and a feminized urethral opening, without a full-length vaginal canal.
Orchiectomy in the same sitting
Testicular removal is typically included unless it was already done. See also standalone orchiectomy.
No canal, no dilation protocol
The recovery still includes wound care and activity limits. It does not include a lifelong dilator schedule.
Hair removal beforehand
Genital skin used in the reconstruction must be treated in advance. See genital clearance for vaginoplasty.
What to expect.
Goals and medical history
Dilation willingness, sexual goals, prior genital surgery, and whether a canal is medically realistic.
Hair removal and letters
Start electrolysis or laser early. WPATH-aligned documentation and insurance authorization run in parallel.
Surgery and recovery
Hospital or surgical-center stay as indicated, then wound care. Travelers should plan enough nights in Los Angeles. See /patients/traveling-patients.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a canal added later?
It is not a simple upgrade. Tissue used now is not sitting unused for later. If you think you may want depth, we discuss that before, not as a revision slogan.
Is vulvoplasty easier to recover from than vaginoplasty?
Usually yes: shorter surgery, no dilation, less packing. It is still major genital surgery. Pain, swelling, and time off work are real.
Does insurance cover zero-depth surgery?
Many plans cover medically necessary vulvoplasty. Some reviewers know the procedure less well than vaginoplasty, which is why documentation should name it clearly. We help with that.
